but with finishing work inside & out to wrap up before Centene Community Ice Center lives up fully to the promises that the Legacy Ice Foundation & its partners made during the Septemgrand opening. I, for one, am already enjoying their contributions regularly. At that point, the Legacy Ice Foundation folks should be able to take a deep breath and enjoy the fruits of their commitment to this community project. This will be the site of outdoor functions & small concerts & other public events, once the surfacing & landscaping & stage area are completed and the season turns. My family & I attended the Christmas Eve public session outdoors the ice quality is roughly (in more ways than one) equivalent to the ice surface of the indoor Plager Rink, but it offers a unique ice skating environment for occasional skaters who will enjoy a breath of fresh air.Īt this point, it appears the only major finishing work remaining around the CCIC complex lies outdoors with the spaces surrounding The Barn rink. This rink has been hosting a lot of youth & adult hockey sessions plus holiday season public skating, unloading the indoor rinks to accommodate figure skating & learn-to-skate sessions as well as sled hockey & other game play during peak hours. The other noteworthy addition was the opening of the fourth & final NHL-sized ice sheet, "The Barn" outdoor rink located on the west end of the CCIC complex. The only other concessions option open regularly is the Schnucks mini-market located just inside the main entrance on the north side, which has pre-packaged food plus snack items and beverages. I will return at my next opportunity to sample other items from the small menu. But the lunch that I had was very good with generous portions for a fair price, and the service was friendly & attentive. I've eaten there just once so far, because it has only been open on weekends. One significant addition in the last couple of months has been the opening of the 314 Social Eats + Drinks bar & grill at the south end of the entry lobby. Something like this has never been done before ," McClure says.Ĭheck the Winterfest website for updates on event details, including ice skate rental information. The construction crews have continued to make progress on wrapping up public area finishing work and meeting/gathering spaces inside Centene Ice since the grand opening. "The foundation is very thankful to be able to do this and work with our sponsors and partners. He adds the foundation has also worked with the National Park Service to install the rink, a process that will begin the week of December 19. McClure says he's personally skated on the type of synthetic ice that will be used for the rink and that it replicates the feeling of real ice (guests can also use real ice skates). The festival also plans to offer an opening night celebration, a whiskey tasting event at the Old Courthouse, Try Hockey for Free clinics, a family friendly New Year's Eve celebration, and a skate and street hockey tournament. Winterfest will also take place in tandem with the 2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic (the Blues versus the Chicago Blackhawks), taking place January 2 at Busch Stadium. He adds, "It's an opportunity for us to bring activity, recreation, and excitement down to the Arch grounds, especially with everything going on downtown during that time period." "To my knowledge, this is the first time there's been an ice rink on the Arch grounds," says Ryan McClure, director of communications for CityArchRiver Foundation, which is renovating the Arch grounds and surroundings in a project expected to be completed in late 2017.
